Working with Lael Chmelyk, these plates were shot vertically on a stand. The stand allowed for better control over lighting direction, shadows and reflections.

Each piece is cleaned, and then only handled with a cotton glove. This ensures that no stray hairs or fingerprints dull the final image.

Each piece’s unique identifier is captured at the same time, for ease of identification and prevents mistakes down the line.

Working with Lael Chmelyk, these plant pots have a very reflective finish. Specular highlights were controlled with directional lighting and an oversized softbox.

This is the second calibration done for every shoot. A pair of grey cards allows for correct exposure and white balance.

A ruler also corrects for any slight deviation in level not accounted for during shoot set up.

These paintings, oil on cardboard, demonstrate the importance of colour and exposure calibration. These photos needed to have perfect reproducibility for future printing purposes. Shot at 85mm for absolutely minimal distortion.

All shoots start with photographing a colour calibration target using identical lighting conditions, lens and camera. These calibration shots are used in the post=production to ensure perfect representation of the original artwork.

In addition to distortion and colour control, large paintings cannot be shot in one frame, as there needs to be enough detail to print at a 1:1 scale. To produce a large enough image with as few flaws as possible, this painting was photographed in a grid of 16 images and stitched together in photoshop. Despite being a 36” x 36” painting, the digital file has enough pixels for perfect print reproduction.

This flat lay was designed to capture the breadth of work including in the same firing, as well as the undersides. Lighting was intentionally directed from the upper right to create shadow depth.

Captured these boutonnieres by dangling them with fishing wire.
